UAE Breeze past Kenya in tournament opener

UAE confirmed their status as tournament favourites when they beat Kenya by a massive 218 at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Namibia on Thursday.

Opting to field first the Kenyans failed to find the penetration they required upfront and instead UAE piled up runs at the top of the innings to put on 133 for the first wicket and ensure a strong position. They continued to dominate with the bat as the opening bowlers; Nehemiah Odhiambo, Emmanuel Bundi and Lucas Oluoch failed to make any inroads into the UAE innings, Odhiambo and Oluoch conceded at 10 runs an over while Bundi’s five an over did not provide an respite and it was left to the lower half of the attack to pull it back for Kenya, Nelson Odhiambo 2 for 33 and Collins Obuya 2 for 20, the most successful Kenyan bowlers.

In reply, Kenya failed to sparkle and a loss of regular wickets throughout their innings saw them to tumble to an undesirable 91 all out in 32.4 overs. Rushab Patel top scoring with 17, he was one of only four batsmen –the others Alex Obanda 15, Nelson 14 and Irfan Karim 11- to register double figures in a poor batting display that left the Kenyans with a huge run rate deficit to recover from.
