Rift Hawks are the 2017 national ladies champions after registering a season high score of 138 in defeating the fighting Rift Flamingos by 24 runs at the Starehe Boys Centre ground on Sunday.

The Hawks enjoyed some good form over the season, with their big guns finding good form in the league. On Sunday, it was however, the turn of the less celebrated pair of Faith Mwende (47) and Esther Wangare (40) to get in the runs that lay the platform for an imposing total that the Flamingos chased in vain falling short by 24 runs in the league’s final match.

This performance follows Sarah Bhakita’s 54 not out, a fortnight ago, that led to a nervy eight-run win over the league’s runners up, Nairobi Eves. Bhakita finished the league as the leading run getter with 144 from four innings.

Hawks youngster Flavia Atieno’s was the pick of the bowlers in this encounter with a clinical 3 for 19 off her four overs. Among her victims was the major scalp of the experienced Margaret Banja whom she had caught and bowled for nine, before cleaning up Marion Juma’s in the top order for nought and later snapping Judith Ajiambo (2) to put paid to Flamingos chase.

In another match, Eves raced to a 10-wicket victory over the hapless Chania Sharks who finished bottom of the pile. Chania had all their batters dismissed for a mere 56 runs that Eves eased to in 6.5 overs thanks for Queentor Aoko and Edith Wanjiru’s unbroken opening stand.
