Collins Obuya’s 122 ball 111 powered Kenya XI to a three-wicket win in the opening encounter against the visiting Oman at Nairobi Jafferys on Sunday.

Obuya conjured a patient century when wickets tumbled around him while keeping the scoreboard ticking and the run rate within touching distance. He brought up his ton off 118 deliveries and found a valuable partner in Hiren Varaiya’s 15 for the seventh wicket stand worth 46 runs. This was after the Oman had claimed Nelson Odhiambo (22) trapped leg before to leave Kenya XI’s batting in hole at 172 for 6.

The home side who won the toss and elected to field restricted their opponents to 233 off their allotted 50 overs. Shem Ngoche was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 40 from 10 overs.

In another encounter played at the Simba Union Club, Kenya Select crashed to Malaysia by 9 wickets. The Far East nation had won the toss and put in the hosts to bat before bundling them for a less than competitive total of 165.

Alex Obanda top scored for the select outfit with 32 from 58 deliveries. Malaysia had reduced the home boys to 91 for 6 before the tail wagged to give the total a worthy look.

The visitors then cruised on Anwar Arudin’s 73 and Ahmad Fiaz’s 66 to finish off a clinical chase with 19.5 overs to spare.

Kenya XI stays at Jafferys to play Malaysia on Monday, while the Kenya Select host Oman at Simba Union the same day.
