Cricket Kenya is set to organize a national U17 tournament in Nairobi from 14-17 April 2014.

The tournament that is aimed at helping Kenya come up with a strong team for next year’s ICC U19 World Cup Qualifiers will consist of four teams from Coast, Nairobi and Rift Valley.

Nairobi will field two teams in the five days event while Coast and Rift Valley will field one team each.

The matches will be played at Sir Ali and Ruaraka Sports Clubs and will be played on the 40 overs format.

Cricket Kenya Development Director Kalpesh Solanki confirmed this event adding that they have decided to come up with U17 tournament rather than theU19 so as to give the youngsters more time to gel as they look at qualifying for the nest U19 World Cup.

“This tournament is a massive help to all our youngsters as we prepare for the next U19 World Cup Qualifiers. We need to keep this players prepared early and prepared well,” Solanki said.

"Having failed to make it to the other U19 World Cup once again, this tournament seems an ideal one to help us come up with a good side,” he added.

Kenya U19 side lost to Namibia in the Qualifiers in Uganda last year and thus missed a chance to make it to their first World Cup appearance since 2002.

"The idea is to make sure the players play together and also receive meaningful competition within their age group,” he said.
